ISO 55001:2014 Asset Management Systems is the standard that is becoming increasing essential for assurance of the effective management of significant asset portfolios. The increasing sophistication of customer and stakeholder requirements for functional performance and reliability is driving organisations to require their suppliers to demonstrate a systematic and comprehensive approach to the management of assets.

ISO 55001 requirements
The standard requires that you situate you Asset Management System in a strategic business context (including compliance) and integrate it into the strategic asset management plan that aligns with your policy, objectives and decision criteria. This includes the ability to systematically identify, assess, evaluate and control your asset management risks and opportunities including business continuity risks.
Senior management must identify and provide the resources required to ensure effective implementation and operation of your Asset Management System so that it achieves its objectives. This includes physical and IT infrastructure as well as the competencies required for your people to deliver the identified performance.
Operational planning and management are in place to enable the implementation of all necessary Asset Management Operational Plans are in place and are being actively monitored for effectiveness. This includes the selection, induction, management, and review of all external suppliers particularly contractors.
Data and analysis need to be in place to enable Asset Management System performance to be evaluated and deviations for the system requirements to be quickly identified. When non-conformances from the system are detected, these are managed through a formal process that seeks to understand their underlying (root) cause, actions that need to be taken to address the root cause and evaluation of the effectiveness of actions to address the nonconformance. The intent is to learn from mistakes and socialise them across the business to prevent recurrence and the consequent damage to the business.
Internal audits of the Asset Management System need to be conducted to assure senior management that the system is being implemented effectively and can achieve its objectives. Top management also needs to undertake a strategic review of the system at least annually to ensure that it can meet the requirements of the business and to plan any improvements.
