The Environmental Management System standard ISO 14011:2015 requires businesses to have an objective means of understanding the environmental impacts and aspects of their business activities including life cycle considerations of products and/or services. A systematic identification of workplace aspects that can impact the environment, selection of controls and/or improvements and the persistent application of those controls and/or improvements. The business also needs to have processes to ensure compliance with legal obligations, respond to incidents, effectively respond to emergencies and learn from mistakes and near misses.

The ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System standard has several mandatory elements of the management framework including:
